Subliminal Messages and early 2014 Reading List

Early 2014 Read List

Last week I talked about marketing practices with two friends. One of them raised techniques used by big corporations in the mid 90s in movie theatres: subliminal messages. He said that a study was conducted where frames reading “hungry? eat pop corn” were flashed to the audience at a rate that the eye could not notice but the brain could interpret. According to my friend, sales of pop corn during the experiment increased by a huge amount.

I did some reading and it turns out to be false. The person who conducted that study (James Vicary) was later accuse of producing false data.

At any rate, opening some of my gifts yesterday made me think of subliminal messages. Earlier this year my mom gave me a book called, “Grow a Pair” and now my other mom on my wife’s side gave me a book entitled, “The Year Without Pants”.

None of the books relate in any way to having kids, but I can’t help but think they are telling me to hurry up and have their grandkids. Last week I visited three babies born to my friends this year. The couple who invited me to stay at their house announced their pregnancy on my second day there and my sister is expecting… babies… babies everywhere!!

“The Year Without Pants” is actually about WordPress.  Looks very interesting. I am also going to read “Taking People With You”, about leadership. I am torn when it comes to my Game of Thrones book collection. I really like what HBO did with the first book, so I haven’t read past the point where Season 3 ended… but I don’t know if I can wait until Season 4 to know what happens next.
